New Music: Janelle Monáe ft. Erykah Badu – ‘Q.U.E.E.N.’
No, no, the booty don’t lie…
It’s all about the neo-soul sisterhood on Janelle Monáe and Erykah Badu’s finger snappin’ and foot tappin’ banger, “Q.U.E.E.N.” The track is the first single off of Janelle’s forthcoming Electric Lady, and in it she tackles all kinds of subject like females throwing shade, social justice, and defying the media’s labels. Erykah, of course, lends her unique vocals to give the track a jazzy vibe, and it’s obvious that these two have a lot in common when it comes their views on how women are perceived in the media and music.
Hey sister am I good enough for your heaven?
Say will your God accept me in my black and white?
Will he approve the way I’m made?
Or should I reprogram the programming and get down?
Even if it makes others uncomfortable
I wanna love who I am
Even if it makes other uncomfortable
I will love who I am
When Janelle caught up with Billboard magazine backstage at this year’s Coachella, she said the inspiration for the song was organic, birthed from real life conversations that she and her “big sister” Erykah have.
Listen to the song below, plus pay particular attention to the rap at the end:
Lyrics to Janelle’s rap:
I asked a question like this
“Are we a lost generation of our people?
Add us to equations but they’ll never make us equal.
She who writes the movie owns the script and the sequel.
So why ain’t the stealing of my rights made illegal?
They keep us underground working hard for the greedy,
But when it’s time to pay they turn around and call us needy.
My crown too heavy like the Queen Nefertiti
Gimme back my pyramid, I’m trying to free Kansas City.
Mixing masterminds like your name Bernie Grundman.
Well I’m gonna keep leading like a young Harriet Tubman
You can take my wings but I’m still goin’ fly
And even when you edit me the booty don’t lie
Yeah, keep singing and I’mma keep writing songs
I’m tired of Marvin asking me, “What’s Going On?
March to the streets ‘cuz I’m willing and I’m able
Categorize me, I defy every label
And while you’re selling dope, we’re gonna keep selling hope
We rising up now, you gotta deal you gotta cope
Will you be electric sheep?
Electric ladies, will you sleep?
Or will you preach?”
Did that!
Kevin Durant is Tired of Being Second!!
This week’s Sports Illustrated cover features Thunder forward Kevin Durant, surrounded by his words that read, at first, like a venting promise.
“I’ve been second my whole life,” Durant tells SI‘s Lee Jenkins in a profile that will hit newsstands on Thursday. “I was the second-best player in high school. I was the second pick in the draft. I’ve been second in the MVP voting three times. I came in second in the Finals. I’m tired of being second. I’m not going to settle for that. I’m done with it.”
That quote perfectly sums up the inherent frustration involved in operating at the highest of levels in LeBron James’ world. Is anything ever good enough when James keeps raising the bar?
But Jenkins’ profile reveals a Durant who has fully embraced that frustration as a means to self-improvement. There isn’t a hint of “woe is me” whining in Durant’s declaration; he’s too busy searching for ways to reach the summit.
That process includes first-hand observation of James, a study that has unfolded over multiple years, drifted into the world of advanced statistics and resulted in a friendship, but one that has only fueled their competitive tension.
“That’s my guy,” Durant says. “I looked up to him [James], and now I battle him
“I don’t watch a lot of other basketball away from the gym,” Durant says. “But I do look at LeBron’s box score. I want to see how many points, rebounds and assists he had, and how he shot from the field. If he had 30 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, I can tell you exactly how he did it, what type of shots he made and who he passed to.” Durant and James take flak for their friendship, but it is based on a mutual appreciation of the craft. They aren’t hanging out at the club. They are feverishly one-upping each other from afar. “People see two young black basketball players at the top of their game and think we should clash,” Durant says. “They want the conflict. They want the hate. They forget Bird cried for Magic. A friend was getting on me about this recently, and I said, ‘Calm down. I’m not taking it easy on him. Don’t you know I’m trying to destroy the guy every time I go on the court?’ ”
It’s one thing to pay lip service to the shot charts and numbers; it’s quite another to employ a personal stat geek and to memorize situational shooting statistics. Durant, we find out, has done both of those things, and more.
Kevin Durant sat in a leather terminal chair next to a practice court and pointed toward the 90-degree- angle at the upper-right corner of the key that represents the elbow. “See that spot,” Durant said. “I used to shoot 38, 39 percent from there off the catch coming around pin-down screens.” He paused for emphasis. “I’m up to 45, 46 percent now.”
Durant has hired his own analytics expert. He tailors workouts to remedy numerical imbalances. He harps on efficiency more than a Prius dealer. To Durant, basketball is an orchard, and every shot an apple. “Let’s say you’ve got 40 apples on your tree,” Durant explains. “I could eat about 30 of them, but I’ve begun limiting myself to 15 or 16. Let’s take the wide-open three and the post-up at the nail. Those are good apples. Let’s throw out the pull-up three in transition and the step-back fadeaway. Those are rotten apples. The three at the top of the circle — that’s an in-between apple. We only want the very best on the tree.”
The takeaway feeling is that Durant exists these days entirely within the “edge” that elite athletes often talk about, and it’s enough to make you wonder how he stays sane, given James’ all-encompassing dominance, and whether the mean streak he’s shown this season is a negative by-product of all that built-up tension. Jenkins explores, concluding that Durant hasn’t fundamentally changed, even if he has evolved.
Previously, if power forward Serge Ibaka blew a box-out, Durant would tell him, “It’s O.K. You’re going to get it next time.” But the stakes had risen. “You want to get to the Finals again, and you think everything should be perfect, and it’s not,” Durant says. “So I’d scream at him and pump my fist.”
Durant has picked up 12 technical fouls this season, more than twice as many as his previous career high, and he was ejected for the first time, in January, after arguing with referee Danny Crawford. “I’m rubbing off on him,” says Thunder center Kendrick Perkins, who keeps a standing 2 a.m. phone call with Durant every night to discuss the state of the team. “He’s getting a little edge on.” The techs dovetailed neatly with Nike’s “KD is Not Nice” marketing campaign, but they still don’t fit the recipient. Even after the ejection, Durant stopped to high-five kids sitting over the tunnel. “People get it confused and think you have to be a jerk to win,” he says. “But we all feed off positive energy. I’m a nice guy. I enjoy making people happy and brightening their day. If someone asks me for an autograph on the street, I don’t want to wave him off and tell him, ‘Hell, no.’ That’s not me. The last few months I’ve calmed down and had more fun. We can still get on each other, but there’s another way.”
In sum, the piece winds up whetting the appetite, especially as a Heat-Thunder rematch looms as a very real postseason possibility. There’s plenty more to process, including details about how Durant improved his ball handling, thoughts from teammates on how he’s honed his game during his six-year career and what the James Harden trade meant for Durant’s offensive role.
Fantasia Covers ‘Upscale’ Magazine May Issue
The American Idol alum Fantasia graces the May 2013 cover of UPSCALE magazine.
Fantasia’s got a new album out today, Side Effects of You, a new look, and a fresh and healthy perspective on life these days.
A few excerpts from her brand new Upscale cover story:
On being open and honest: “Everything that I’ve talked about and put out there, it’s helped someone. It might not have helped the person who had something smart to say or had a joke or whatever, but there’s 10 other people that’s inspired by my story. So I wouldn’t change anything. I’m just going to continue to be that person that is open and honest because that’s me, that’s Fantasia.”
On loving herself: “The first thing I want is peace, peace of mind. Being able to be comfortable in my own skin, being able to say ‘this is what I want to do’ instead of trying to please everybody else.”
On people relating to her: “The things that I go through, people go through everyday. I’ve had some rough times and some moments that I wouldn’t say I’m very proud of, but I can say that for me, I’m glad that I was able to let it out. I believe that’s when we become not real, that’s when we become fake—when we try to make things look like it’s just so perfect.”
Upscale is on Newstands now.
Shemar Moore Talks Industry Women He’s Dated: ‘I Fell Hard For Halle’
These days Shemar Moore may be known as ‘that guy from Criminal Minds,’ but some old schoolers can remember a time where he was the soap opera pretty boy whose body made for great poster art on wall. Shemar recently caught up with BET for a trip down memory lane and began dishing the tea on what it was like to date industry women like Halle Berry and Toni Braxton. He also talked about his current bachelor status, while saying that he’s still single at age 43 by choice and he’s just waiting for the right time and the right woman.
Check out excerpts from the interview below.
On his relationship with Toni Braxton and Halle Berry
[Toni Braxton] was my first Hollywood relationship. I was a baby, I did not know s***. I had just graduated from college, I had no money and I was on Young and the Restless. She called my agent when she was shooting a video in Miami, and it just went from there. I was like the little kid who found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It was a wild ride with Toni. She would never sing for me, though. That always bothered me.
[Halle] was the first woman to really knock my socks off. I fell hard for Halle. A lot of people now know we dated, but we had to keep it hush-hush at the time because she was fresh off her divorce from David Justice. I’m still grateful for that relationship. I was smitten not just because of who she was, but because we were so similar in so many ways. She was biracial, she was kind of going through the same things I was in Hollywood. Toni was a fun ride, but Halle was a necessary experience. It made me much stronger as a man, and knowing the caliber of woman I want in the future.
On whether he has any regrets dating Halle Berry
No, none at all. She’s a tough cookie. I’m glad she’s got a family now. If this love she’s got with this guy is real, then that’s what she needs.
When asked whether he plans to settle down any time soon, he responded:
It’s no accident that I’m not married and don’t have kids yet. Because despite what I’ve achieved in my career, I’m always wondering when somebody’s gonna tap me on the shoulder and say, “OK, the gig is up.” I don’t mind being uncomfortable. In fact, I like being uncomfortable, picking up and moving, and all that. But, it’s not exactly the best scenario for a family. Of course, I want to be able to share that with somebody one day. When I do tie the knot, it will be one time, for good.

Chris Brown Clarifies Plans For Possible Hip Hop Album
Chris Brown says he wants to "be taken a hundred percent serious as a rapper" before releasing a full Hip Hop album and claims the world might not be ready "for Chris Brown, the rapper."
Chris Brown is hesitant to make an entire Hip Hop album. His latest project, X, is due later this year and Brown says it will feature some raps. However, he also claimed he doesn't know "if the world is ready for Chris Brown, the rapper."
"For me, I think I would have to progress more as an emcee first," he acknowledged in an interview with Power 98. "It's just me having fun and showcasing who I am. So an album, I would really have to be taken a hundred percent serious as a rapper. I like Rap. I love it. Music is my passion. Even on my album now, there's a couple songs that I rap on. But as far as a whole album, I don't know if the world is ready for Chris Brown, the rapper."
His love for music has also allowed him to keep his sights open to possible albums in various genres.
“Music is for everyone,” he added. “When you put genres on music, you segregate it... I want to always be able to do any kind of music I want. When I get older I might want to do a Country album. Next year, I might want to do an all Hip Hop album or Alternative album. Just making sure that anything that goes down, showing my audience or showing people that have a creative mind that you can do anything you want, it’s just about believing and loving what you’re doing in a positive way.”
Brown was recently criticized for his rapping skills by Drake. Speaking of a potential battle, Drake explained his hesitation. "I don't want to hear that man rap. No one wants to hear me rap against him. I really do this shit." In his own interviews, Brown has acknowledged that he "can't be taken serious" in a battle and that he is "not a rapper."
MMM Okay.
Porsha Spills The Divorce Tea On "WWHL" With Vivica Fox
Porsha told everything while she was on Andy's show with Vivica Fox. And it's just as bad as we thought. She was blindsided and learned of her divorce from Twitter:
I was totally blindsided. At the reunion (before the papers were filed), I did feel some kind of way because I did want my husband there with me. But I was standing strong representing for my family. I was a wife, that was my title and that's what I took on and had ownership of. But when I found out about the divorce it was absolutely a surprise. I was laying in the bed and woke up and I tweeted "Today is the first day of the rest of your life." And I put the phone down and took another nap like I always do sometimes (Sigh). And then I looked back at my phone and my sister was calling me over and over. She said "Have you heard?" I said 'heard what' and let me go to Twitter. (Double sigh)
The first thing I see is 'Kordell divorcing Porsha. I'm like, 'this is a crazy joke'. But yes, I found out from Twitter. I called my sister back and said I'm going to ask him about it--I went in there and asked him. He was there (in the house) (TRIPLE SIGH). I asked him had he filed. And I felt very disappointed and let down.
Porsha explained that divorce was not her choice, and she feels betrayed:
"When I got married, I meant it for life. I always said I would never get a divorce unless he cheated on me. I had to find out from my attorney if it was true, he had to look it up online. And yes, they're still living in the same house together. But she said that doesn't mean they speak and it doens't mean she's still cooking eggs and hamhocks. She says she spends time away with friends and family in Atlanta and "It's a difficult situation right now. It's something I did not want. I had asked previously can we work this out, can we go to counseling."
Word.
Now cue Pastor Porsha. Chick slipped into her Evangelist ways to preach on what a good wife should do:
"What you saw at the reunion was a wife trying her last try. When you are married you have to put 150% into your marriage no matter what. And if it doesn't work, you need to be able to walk away and say I tried. It aint always gonna be easy or a happy situation, but when you have made a vow to that man and the child you have in your home, you owe them that. So I feel like it was a betrayal that I suffered from and that's something I'm going to have to move on from. At least I feel like I put in my best at the end of the day."
Amen.
Meanwhile, Porsha looked great as usual and she and Viv had tons of fun with Andy
LOL! FAB!
REUNITED: Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield in Atlanta!
This is a great sight to see. Heavyweight Champions Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield are spotted having a blast together. They have let be bygones be bygones. In the photo above Mike had tweeted the following caption:
Me and @holyfield having a good time in the ATL #beingtyson #FS1
Back in June 28, 1997, Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield’s ear in the third round of their heavyweight rematch. The attack led to his disqualification from the match and suspension from boxing, and was the strangest chapter in the champion’s roller-coaster career.
Back to having a good time with Evander @Holyfield. Great times brother
Nice seeing the two get along. Wonderful!

Will Smith Talks Refusal To Punish Kids & Jada’s Controversial Facebook Posts
Obviously, the Smiths aren’t your average American family, but when they talk, people sure do listen.
This week, Will and his 14-year-old son Jaden began promo rounds for their new movie, After Earth, and while chatting it up with Metro New York, Will revealed that he doesn’t believe in punishing his kids because punishment breeds a negative quality. His unconventional parenting method of giving his kids absolute freedom must work because his kids have definitely stayed out of a lot of trouble and Jaden even revealed he doesn’t care to go to parties.
Will also dished a little on his thoughts on his wife’s numerous controversial Facebook posts, including the one responding to the topic of their rumored “open” marriage.
Catch what he had to say below:
On Punishing His Kids
We don’t do punishment. The way that we deal with our kids is, they are responsible for their lives. Our concept is, as young as possible, give them as much control over their lives as possible and the concept of punishment, our experience has been — it has a little too much of a negative quality. So when they do things — and you know, Jaden, he’s done things — you can do anything you want as long as you can explain to me why that was the right thing to do for your life.
Jaden on Partying
Not at all. I go out and skate every night. Hang out with people, skate, hang out with more people, skate to their house.[...]It’s not like I don’t want to go to parties because I need to study and go to college; I just don’t wanna go. If they’re gonna play house music, I’m maybe interested, but if it’s some random place and they’re playing Waka Flocka Flame….[...]Other teenagers go to parties and sometimes I be like, “Why am I here right now?” And most of the time, I just leave right then and there. Some things I don’t like to do, that other teenagers do. Everyone thinks that since you make movies, you go to parties, and I like to party, but not normal teenage parties.
Will On If Jaden Being an Emancipated Minor
[Laughs] No, it’s not like that. More the idea that, I want him to have as much command and freedom if he is willing to accept responsibility. Those are two concepts that are inexorably bound. So he’s a very responsible young man so he’s entitled to the maximum freedom. [To Jaden] I said “inexorably.” You heard that? Someone Google that for Jaden.
On Jada’s Facebook
Jaden: [impersonating Jada] “I don’t care what people say. If we get hit for this, this is what the truth of the world is.’”Uh, okkkkay mom. She’ll be on the phone with a manager, “I don’t care what they said, I’m posting this on Facebook.” I think she should write a book.
Will: Jada is very serious and opinionated and she loves Facebook because it’s the only place she’s ever had where she’s felt like all of her can be received. She’s struggled her whole life where only a part of her is OK.
Meanwhile, last week Jada took to Facebook to clarify ‘Will can do whatever he wants‘ comment, which somehow or another opened up a whole new can of worms in the press. She wrote:
I am addressing this issue because a very important subject has been born from discussions about my statement that may be worthy of addressing. The statement I made in regard to, ‘Will can do whatever he wants,’ has illuminated the need to discuss the relationship between trust and love and how they co-exist.
Should we be married to individuals who can not be responsible for themselves and their families within their freedom? Should we be in relationships with individuals who we can not entrust to their own values, integrity, and LOVE…for us??? Here is how I will change my statement…Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so. This does NOT mean we have an open relationship…this means we have a GROWN one.
When asked about that, Will responded:
She put some serious, hardcore truth out there. [Pauses] And I think, the five minutes we have left, aren’t gonna be enough to cover it. [Laughs]

Keenen Ivory Wayans And Brittany Daniel GET KISSY On Vacation In Miami
Funnyman Kennen Ivory Wayans took a break from his hectic Hollywood production schedule to soak up a few Florida rays with his girlfriend, actress Brittany Daniel.
Keenan looked very cozy with Brittany (in a zebra bikini) as they spent the day relaxing by the pool.
Though Brittany starred alongside Keenen's brother Marlon in the flick Little Man, we haven't seen much of her on the silver screen or on teleivsion. We wonder if she will ever reprise her "Kelly Pitts" role on The Game? We'd love to see her go one-on-one with Brandy's Chardonnay character.
And in other Wayans tv news, Keenen's ex-wife, Daphne Wayans is expected to be on the next season of Hollywood Exes. And we're hoping the the In Living Color special that Keenen shot for Fox will see the light of day this year.
Chicago Teen Gunned Down Near President Obama's Home
Chicago's gun violence has claimed the life of yet another 15-year-old, killed near the home of President Obama. In addition to the fatality, at least nine others injured during a string of overnight shootouts in the Windy City Monday (April 22).
The youngster, Cornelius German, was gunned down four blocks from the commander in chief's Chicago residence. His passing marks the second time a high schooler was been shot near the location this year, the first being 15-year-old Hadiya Pendelton.
German was shot in the back as he stood on the corner of the 700 block of East 50th Street. His mother and her husband were waiting to pick him up less than a block away. "I kept telling my husband, 'I don't feel right,'" Timika Rutledge-German said.
She texted the boy telling him to walk home before seeing police in the area. An officer confirmed that her son was killed. "I knew it was my baby because I saw his shoes, and I saw his jacket. And I know it was him 'cause I had just bought the shoes and the jacket."
According to police spokesperson John Mirabelli, the deceased was a gang member, but the motive behind the shooting had not yet been confirmed, nor have any arrests been made.
Nine others were hit during separate shootings starting Monday evening, and into the next morning. Among the injured, were four men ages 19, 30, 32, and 34 --all struck by a single gunman at around 4:15 p.m.. They were taken to local hospitals and have all been listed in stable condition.
Four hours later a 20-year-old man was shot in the abdomen, and a 23-year-old man was shot in the leg.
Police are investigating the shootings.

Wissam Al Mana Shuts Down Rolex Rumors
Before it was revealed that Janet Jackson and billionaire Wissam Al Mana were already married, rumors spread that Janet and Wissam were planning an over the top no expenses spared wedding with Rolex watches being given to every guest [click here if you missed that].
Wissam shuts down the rumors making it clear excess is not his style...
From Quatar Today
Q: Describe your personal style:
A: Let me start by telling what is not my personal style. There are a lot of rumors in the media that were started in gossip magazines about me throwing this huge lavish wedding that would cost millions and that I would be giving out gold Rolexes to all the guests. They are fabricated lies. Firstly, I don't even like Rolex watches and personally think gold Rolex watches are tacky. I would never have a lavish wedding because it is not my style, nor would I feel right about it given the poverty that plagues our world. I would much rather give that money to charity, to people who are starving or living in war stricken areas like Syria. what I find very strange is that the Arab media amongst others basically sourced their information from the National Enquirer, out of all magazines.
So There!
AND FINALLY FROM “THE CRAZY PEOPLE SHOPPING AT WALMART” FILES
‘I CAN SEE DOWN YOUR SHORTS’
I guess she speechless for seeing his goodies?
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!
