BREAKING; Michael Winans Jr. gets 13 years in $8M fraud scheme

A member of a well-known gospel music family was sentenced today to nearly 14 years in prison for financially defrauding more than 1,200 investors in an $8 million pyramid scheme.

During today’s sentencing hearing in Detroit, a federal prosecutor and the judge both blasted Michael Winans Jr., 30, of Maryland, for using his Christian faith and family’s reputation in a financial scam that ruined the lives of numerous churchgoers.

After emotional testimony from two of Winans' many victims, Judge Sean Cox sentenced the onetime Grammy nominee to 13 years and 9 months in federal prison and ordered him to pay his victims $4.8 million in restitution. 

Winans took advantage of “good, decent, church-going people,” said Judge Cox in U.S. District Court before sentencing him. “That is very, very troubling to me…You used…churches to perpetuate this fraud.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Abed Hammoud said of Winans: “He used religion. He used the church, the good reputation of the family,” to rob victims.

Winans pled guilty in October to wire fraud. Prosecutors said in court filings that “he clearly abused the fact that he came from a very well known family with a good reputation in order to induce people to invest with him.”

Dressed in a gray suit, Winans addressed the court today, acknowledging that “I did make mistakes.”

I caused “financial and emotional damage. For that I repent,” Winans told the judge. 

But, he claimed, there was no “malicious intent on my part…I wanted people to have a good life.”

Winans led “investors…to believe they were investing in Saudi Arabian crude oil bonds that (he) well knew did not exist,” said the sentencing memo of Hammoud. “Winans…guaranteed the victim investors that the bonds would yield returns of approximately 100% of the principle within 60 days.”

Winans is the grandson of David (Pop) Winans Sr. and the nephew of Marvin Winans, the pastor of Perfecting Church in Detroit who is known nationally for his gospel music. Marvin Winans, who gave the eulogy last year at Whitney Houston’s funeral, was in the courtroom today. He did not comment. 

At the sentencing, there were also several victims of the pyramid scheme, some of whom cried.

Hammoud said in court today “there may be additional victims” of Winans’ scheme. He said there’s a “sea of anger” among Winans’ victims.

In many cases, people fooled by Winans convinced loved ones to give money. Some lost their homes, their college tuition money, and the trust of ones close to them.

Tina Hurt, one of his victims, said today in court that many marriages and relationships have been destroyed because of Winans.

“We’ve experience turmoil,” she said.  “I trusted him. I confided a lot in him.”

Despite the transgressions, Jackson said: “I have to forgive him. I feel so bad for him. I feel so bad for us.”

Steveland Barrow was arrested last Thursday after breaking into the home of Rihanna’s neighbor. Cops says Barrow thought the home he entered was Rihanna’s. He told cops he was invited in … he allegedly slept in the bed he thought was Rihanna’s and stole property. Rihanna claims in the legal docs she fears for her safety, the judge issued a temporary restraining order, prohibiting Barrow from coming within 100 yards of all things Rihanna.

Black Lawmaker Receives Death Threat Over Gun Bill: ‘There Will Be Blood! I’m Coming For You, N—–’

Via Think Progress: Late last week, police arrested a man for allegedly sending threatening messages to Colorado state Rep. Rhonda Fields (D), a supporter of gun safety laws. Fields sponsored bills banning high-capacity magazines in Colorado and requiring universal background checks for gun sales and transfers.

According to police, a man named Franklin Sain sent six emails, one voicemail and one written letter to Fields that were riddled with obscenities, racial slurs, sexist language and violent threats:

“I guarantee there is not enough law enforcement or military to stop an all-out overthrow of this government if you or that n—– president tries to take our guns,” one e-mail dated Feb. 13 reads. “Guarantee we will make World War I and II look like child’s play, many will die. Be prepared.”

Another e-mail expresses hope that someone would “Giffords” both Fields and Rep. Beth McCann, a reference to the 2011 mass shooting that nearly killed Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords.

The paper letter attributed to Sain states, “There will be blood! I’m coming for you, n—– b—–.” . . . “Limiting magazine sizes is stupid and will not work,” he wrote on Feb. 13. “I for one have 100+ 30 round mags and 150 round drums. I will never give those up and I am far from being some whack job.”

In an email to Fields the following day, Sain wrote: “I ordered a ton of new 30 round magazines today C***bag…go f*** yourself and your new law…we won’t abide by it…C*** N*****.”

Before she joined the legislature, Fields’ own son was shot and killed as he waited to testify against a gang member.

A millionaire hip-hop mogul has a bold plan to rid New York City streets of firearms: He wants to offer young gunslingers who turn in their weapons mentorships ... and Beyoncé concert tickets.

Michael (Blue) Williams, the head of Family Tree Entertainment, has pitched the city’s first private-sector gun buyback program to NYPD brass and is waiting for Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly’s okay.

“We want to get as many guns off the streets, and if this works, we’d like to support it,” Kelly told the Daily News, adding that the proposal needs more study.

If given the green light, Williams — who has managed the wildly successful careers of OutKast and Cee-Lo Green and has the ear of hip-hop and rap royalty — said he’ll solicit help from none other than Beyoncé.

“The Beyoncé show is coming to Brooklyn; the Jay-Z show is coming to Yankee Stadium. Our goal is to reach out to individuals who are in my industry, in my world and who I have an association with and get their support,” Williams, 43, said Monday.

“I think we should all work together to help get guns off the streets,” Williams said.

Beyoncé is slated to perform at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in August, while Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake are set to play Yankee Stadium in July. Williams hopes to also talk Jay-Z into the guns for tickets deal — once police sign off on it.

Williams hopes to launch the program — dubbed “Guns for Greatness” — on March 23 at a Brooklyn church.

Kelly said the police would have to be involved.

 “You need police officers present. You’d need the expertise,” Kelly said.

Williams has raised $75,000 for the program is working to boost that figure to $100,000.

“This program aims to provide young people with an opportunity to receive guidance and inspiration from committed mentors, an important option that will enable them to experience possibilities other than a life surrounded by gun violence and unnecessary shootings and killing,” Williams’ letter to Kelly reads.

Hot 97 radio, the International House of Pancakes and several record labels, including Polo Grounds Music and Primary Wave Music, have also signed on.

Williams said he was prompted to do something about gun violence after his business partner, Chris Lighty, co-founder of Violator records, shot himself to death in August. He said his own recent arrest for bringing a gun he had registered in Georgia but not in New York through LaGuardia Airport was also an “eye-opening experience.”

 “It was just sort of like a pushing point,” Williams said. “It eventually convinced me that one person can make a difference if they believe in something.”

He sent a written proposal to Kelly on Friday after meeting with top police brass.

The letter was co-signed by Richard Buery, president and CEO of the Children’s Aid Society; L. Londell McMillan, publisher of The Source magazine; and former federal prosecutor Kenneth Thompson.

“I was very excited to lend any assistance I could because I think what he (Williams) has developed is unprecedented,” said Thompson, 46, a candidate for Brooklyn district attorney. “Blue has set up a way to reach these young men.”

Thompson, who went into private practice after helping to prosecute cops involved in the infamous Abner Louima torture case, envisioned the program serving as a model across the nation.

“He doesn’t have to do this,” he said of Williams, who has made a fortune in a hip-hop management career spanning 20 years. “He’s doing this because it’s the right thing to do.”

Source magazine publisher Londell McMillan co-signed the letter to Kelly. 

The program will aim at enticing young black and Latino men ages 16 to 36 to give up their weapons for a chance at an alternative to gun violence.

In the letter to Kelly, Williams noted that “95% of shooting victims and shooting suspects in New York City are either black or Latino.”

“A disturbingly high number of these victims are young people,” the letter reads. “As Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Mayors Against Illegal Guns and others have noted strongly, the issue of gun violence is an urgent crisis that requires immediate attention.”

Williams said the initiative would be similar to the current NYPD gun-buyback program offering up to $250 cash for weapons surrendered anonymously with no questions asked.

But anyone who seizes the opportunity to sign up for a mentorship with major movers and shakers from an array of industries — including the recording business and finance — will receive a bonus, he said.

 “You can make a decision to take that money and walk back out, or you can make the choice to get a mentor,” said Williams, raised in the south Bronx by a single mother who was a school principal.

Former federal prosecutor Kenneth Thompson also co-signed the letter. 

“In my perfect world, I’d love to have a gift package for signing up for the mentorship program that is worth way more than $250,” he said. “I think that when you’re dealing with younger people, you have to offer a little more to incentivize them,” he said.

The NYPD’s gun-buyback efforts began in 2008 with the collection of 2,632 firearms, but public participation has drastically dwindled since. Last year, only 941 guns were surrendered.

And Williams suggested the demographic turning over guns to the NYPD includes very few of the young hip-hop fans he deals with on a daily basis.

 “That’s the audience they need to reach out for, the ones who are carrying the guns and committing the crimes. That’s my sweet spot, so to speak,” Williams said.

Well it remains unclear if Beyoncé will lend her support to Williams’ program. Hopefully she will!

The son of a woman whose body parts were found shoved into bags and scattered around a Bronx neighborhood has confessed to the crime, after an electric saw and other carving implements were discovered in the apartment they shared.

Police were overwhelmed by the stench of bleach when they entered the apartment 22-year-old Bashid McLean shared with his mother Tanya Byrd, 45, whom he is suspected of killing. 

He was led out of the house in handcuffs after police recovered a saw, gloves and a Sawzall power saw, which they believe he used in the disturbing crime.

Byrd's body parts were found strewn around at least four different curbside locations within a half-mile of the pair's Morrisania home in the early hours of Tuesday morning. 

The pieces - which include her head, torso, right leg and hands - were found zipped into travel bags or stuffed into plastic garbage bags.

McLean, who suffers learning disabilities, admitted to the crime during questioning by NYPD officers, sources told The New York Daily News. 

Investigators have spent the day scouring through piles of trash in the South Bronx neighborhood after a horrified dog-walker discovered human remains in a travel bag at around 4:30am and called police.

One-by-one, Byrd's decapitated head, right leg, torso and hands have been unearthed in the area around Eagle Avenue, 158th Street, 156th Street and Cauldwell Avenue. 

Some of Byrd's body parts were still wearing the clothes she was in when she was slaughtered, police sources told the Daily News.

Byrd was sometimes frightened of her son but loved him, a relative who didn't want to be named told DNAInfo. 'He's acted out in violent ways before, but I never thought he could do something like this. Not in a million years.'

But Byrd's sister, Cassandra McLean, insisted the boy was innocent.

She believes her sister's allegedly abusive ex-boyfriend was responsible for her ghastly murder and dismemberment.

Police confirmed Byrd's son reported her missing at the Bronx's 40th precinct station. He found a photograph of her, which they matched to the decapitated head found in one of the bags, when police showed up at his house. This is when they discovered the saw. 

He reportedly told police he hadn't been able to contact his mother for at least a day. 

Cassandra McLean said her nephew suffered learning difficulties from an early age.

She said Bashid McLean told her Byrd's former boyfriend dropped by on Monday and that was the last time he saw her. 

'He (the ex-boyfriend) came over yesterday and walked out with her in the morning, yesterday morning,' McLean told the newspaper. 'That’s what her son told me on the phone just now.'

She told DNAInfo that Byrd's ex-boyfriend was trouble. 

'I told my sister to stay away from him, but she said he's harmless and not to worry.'

McLean added of her sister, who also had a 23-year-old daughter and a six-year-old son with Down's syndrome: 'She was a loving mother and very devoted to her son. That's what she lived for. That's her joy in life.' 

Neighbor Elizabeth Cruz told the newspaper the woman would never have left her youngest son willingly, as his Down's syndrome means he is very reliant on her.

Another neighbor who knew the woman told DNAInfo that Byrd was a good to her kids.

'She's a good person, she's a good mom,' they said.

The Daily News reported a witness saying they saw a suspect dump the bags and their gruesome contents on the curb for collection and then flee the scene in a silver SUV.

One woman said a female leg was clearly visible, protruding from one of the bags. 

'It was sticking out the bag and apparently it was an African-American leg,' she told WCBS 880. 'It was on top of the garbage that we put out.'

Byrd's right leg was found on Eagle Avenue near 156th Street, while her torso was discovered on Eagle Ave near 158th Street, witnesses told The Post.

The mother's head was found at Cauldwell Avenue and 158th. Investigators have also found the woman's hand, though it's unclear where.

'I saw the police find it. It was on top of the garbage, the recyclables,' a 53-year-old witness told The Post of the leg discovery.

She said it was in a plastic trash bag that was stuffed inside a small traveler's bag. 

'That family is going to suffer, somebody is going to wake up without their mother,' she added early this morning.

Investigators are continuing to look through other garbage piled up on the street along with discarded furniture and have roped off the area.

Building superintendents were told to steer clear of the trash piles.

'You could tell it was real. You could see past the ankle, but there was no blood,' Bobby, a superintendent for a building overlooking where one of the body parts was found, told DNAInfo. 

'It's creepy. It feels like some Freddy Kruger stuff. I don't like it at all, man.'

Byrd was taken to the medical examiner to determine the cause of death.

The bags were found strewn near El Batey Borincano Garden, part of a quiet residential block that comprises two religious schools and a church.

'I really don't know what to think,' nearby resident Joyce Placencia told CBS News. 'This is the first time I've seen something like this happening around here.'

Dozens of uniformed police officers swarmed the area after the disturbing discoveries and continued searching for evidence into the afternoon. 

A police spokesman said they'll remain at the scene as long as required. R.I.P!

Oscar 2013: The Onion comes under fire for calling 9-year-old nominee Quvenzhané Wallis the C-word

Quvenzhané Wallis was the target of an offensive tweet from The Onion's Twitter account Sunday night.

Satirical website The Onion has made it’s name walking the line between the questionable and objectionable in its content. But the Sunday night tweet during the Oscars calling 9-year-old "Beasts of the Southern Wild" star Quvenzhané Wallis a ‘c--t’ obliterated that line as it drew outrage from social media users across the twitterverse.

"Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c--t, right? #Oscars2013,” it read.

Apparently the Onion wasn't keen on owning up to the outrageous claim as well, as the tweet was hastily deleted after negative reaction started pouring in.

"The Wire" star Wendell Pierce saw it, and called for the Onion staff to identify its culprit tweeter.

The use of the offensive word was met with shock and outrage from social media users.

"@TheOnion Identify the writer. Let him defend that abhorrent verbal attack of a child. You call it humor I call it horrendous," he wrote. "It doesn't matter what the intent was, it was offensive and they should apologize to Quvenzhane."

Pierce’s sentiment echoed around Twitter.

"Assumed I heard wrong," wrote news pundit Keith Olbermann. "No; they DID wrong. Retract, apologize, dismiss."

"Quvenzhane Wallis is a nine year old woman of colour [sic]," one offended user wrote. "Let's let what @TheOnion did sink in and remember that Dakota Fanning never had this."

On Monday, the website's CEO Steve Hannah apologized on behalf of his organization via Facebook.

"On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars. It was crude and offensive," he wrote.

"In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible.Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry."

Ever since the spunky 9-year-old burst on the scene with "Beasts of the Southern Wild," her name has been making headlines. Not only for her work, but because critics and TV personalities have struggled to pronounce her moniker correctly.

With such a heralded young actress, many people think simply bowing out of learning to pronounce “Quvenzhané” correctly is just as offensive as hurling an insult. The Twitterverse also chastised E! host Kelly Osbourne on Sunday for opting to call her "Little Q," instead of attempting to say her name during red carpet coverage.

'It is rude, unprofessional and borderline racist to not even try to pronounce her name properly," one user wrote.

"Aren't you paid to be a host?" wrote another, "Do your research and practice her name. Stupid Kelly Osbourne."

Her name is a hot commodity in Hollywood these days. Wallis scored a hefty role in the upcoming Brad Pitt flick "Twelve Years a Slave," and just yesterday it was announced that she is the new lead in the upcoming "Annie" movie-musical remake.

The attempts to make the nine-year-old a palatable part of Hollywood have only led to more people rallying in support of her uniqueness.  Much like Mia Wasikowska and Gabourey Sidibe, whose names previously stumped red carpet reporters, Wallis’s rising star will make for plenty more opportunities to practice name pronunciation.

Jermaine Dupri KICKS OFF So So Def 20th Anniversary With Bow Wow, Jagged Edge, Da Brat & Xscape

Jermaine Dupri teamed up with VIBE, Crown Royal Black, Ciroc, Brand Jordan, UBER and Blackberry to kick off the So So Def 20th Anniversary.

The festivities kicked off with an intimate dinner at a top secret location in Atlanta with his artists, including folks like Bone Crusher.  He told everyone, “This is my way of saying thank you for helping me build the So So Def empire. This is a historical moment, so tonight I’m celebrating you. Sit back, relax…I’m gonna serve you. But enjoy it, because that will never happen again!” 

The staff served the guests a lavish meal prepared by Chef Michael Hebb and custom “Afroman” cake by Jaxon Pastries.

Bow Wow, one of Jermaine's top selling acts (and biggest mouth pieces) was there to rep for So So Def. 

Chris Kelly (of Kris Kross) wore his pants backwards, ofc ourse, and showed his support.

Chris and Bow Wow were later seen greeting one another when Jermaine revealed that it was their first time meeting!  “In all these years, this is the first time that Bow Wow and Chris Kelly have ever met. Bow Wow is a product of Kris Kross, so the fact that we can bring everyone together like this means a lot.”

New Couple Alert: Selena Gomez Cheated On Justin With Gucci Mane???

I am laughing hard as hell if this is the truth! Is this a JOKE?  The gossip site Perez Hilton shared with us some absurd piece of news. There was a rumor spreading around on blog sites that Selena Gomez allegedly hooked up with Gucci Mane while they were on set of Spring Breakers, which is due out on March 22. Supposedly, this happened during her relationship with Justin Bieber. This may explain the change in Bieber lately…

Harmony Korine’s upcoming film stars Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine. From the trailers shown of the film so far, Gucci Mane plays a rival drug dealer with a score to settle. He has a few lines in the short clips—“Y’all wanna die tonight?”—but it seems he had plenty of time to get to know the 20-year-old Disney star a little better.

The report, revealed by a production assistant, says that Gucci spent a few hours with Selena in her trailer. While there were times when he hung out with his co-stars, he would almost always be alone with Selena. The crew member explained:

“We thought it was [odd] that she was in there with [Gucci Mane]. One time [producers] sent security to make sure she was OK… It almost became a joke, [another employee] said [to Gucci Mane] ‘Watch out or I’m telling Justin.’ [Gucci] was like ‘F*ck that lil n*gga.”

It is outlandish to hear Gucci got a little too friendly with Selena. The Trap God knows better than to get involved in an affair with Bieber’s former girlfriend. Plus, Gucci probably knows that tabloid headlines are not a good look for him. In fact, he mentioned that Bieber showed up to show his support and even shouted him out. (No bad blood here.)

“I heard one time Justin came to the to the set to support Selena and support the movie,” he said. “I didn’t see him but shout out him for supporting the movie and shout out Selena for being in the movie.”

On the flip side, Selena may be fresh off the breakup with Bieber, but we can’t imagine her first choice for a rebound is Gucci. Those two canoodling just doesn’t make any sense. Teacher Busted Paying Student For Sex

A teacher in New Jersey is under arrest, accused of using social media to offer a student money in return for sex.

Thomas Weir, 50, was a teacher at John F. Kennedy High School in Paterson.

Police say Weir used Facebook to message the male student, and asked to meet him in the parking lot of a restaurant.

He allegedly offered $50 in return for sex.

Weir was taken into custody Saturday night in the restaurant parking lot and charged with multiple counts, including attempted sexual assault, attempted endangering the welfare of a child, luring and enticing a child and official misconduct.

In his wonderfully juicy new book, “Soundtrack of My Life,” Clive Davis confirms what has always been out there: Michael Jackson purposely tried to kill off brother Jermaine’s career. In the mid 80s, Davis signed Jermaine Jackson and had a couple of hits that still stand up: “Do What You Do” and “Tell Me I’m Not Dreaming.” Michael didn’t like this.

When Clive hired Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and LA Reid in the late 1980s to produce Jermaine’s fourth album at Arista Records, Michael had enough, Davis says. The King of Pop tied up Babyface for his own projects, ripping him away from Jermaine. Clive writes: “Jermaine couldn’t believe that Michael, his close brother, would hijack his producers’ material this way.”At a dinner in Paris, Clive recalls, Jermaine was “crying, indeed sobbing at times, so deeply hurt that his brother would do this to him.”

The older brother was so angry that he wrote his infamous song, “Word to the Badd,” which denounced Michael as shallow and selfish. Michael responded by calling Davis and demanding he take the song off of Jermaine’s new album.

Cardinal Resigns Amid Sex Scandal

The United Kingdom’s top cardinal, Keith O’Brien, is to step down as an archbishop, effective immediately, according to a statement published on the website of the Scottish Catholic news office.

Cardinal O’Brien, who is the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland and the U.K.’s most senior Roman Catholic, also says he is choosing not to take part in the election of the next pope next month to succeed Pope Benedict XVI, a process known as the “conclave.’ He said in a statement that he will not attend.

He says he is resigning due to allegations surrounding unspecified inappropriate behavior toward priests in the 1980s. He contests the allegations.

“Approaching the age of seventy-five and at times in indifferent health, I tendered my resignation as Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh to Pope Benedict XVI some months ago. I was happy to know that he accepted my resignation ‘nunc pro tunc’ — (now — but to take affect later) on 12 November 2012,” said Cardinal O’Brien, in the statement.

“I thank Pope Benedict XVI for his kindness and courtesy to me on my own behalf and on behalf of the people of Scotland, I wish him a long and happy retirement.”

It is not yet clear if he is resigning from the College of Cardinals as well. In an interview with the BBC on Friday, Cardinal O’Brien said he found the prospect of choosing the next pope “almost frightening.”

Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation takes effect on Thursday. And Monday, Benedict issued a letter spelling out line-by-line changes in canon law that will allow cardinals to set an earlier date for electing his successor. The number of eligible electors — cardinals under the age of 80 — is now 115.

However, there is growing pressure from U.S. victims of clergy sexual abuse for Cardinal Roger Mahony, the retired Archbishop of Los Angeles, to withdraw from the conclave. More than 30,000 pages of priest personnel records released last month revealed that Mahony had been directly involved in covering up for priests who were known to have abused children and teens.

Mahony has been writing on his personal blog that he plans to attend the conclave and to vote. There’s precedent for that. In 2005, Cardinal Bernard Law, who resigned from his post as Archbishop of Boston in 2002 at the height of the explosive abuse scandal, nonetheless voted in the election that chose Benedict.

The last time a cardinal resigned from the College of Cardinals was in 1927, says church historian Matthew Bunson. French Cardinal Louis Billot stepped down because his support for a radical, conservative political movement was in direct conflict with then-Pope Pius XI who opposed it.
