BREAKING NEWS: Baby Johnylah Watkins, DIES from her Injuries!
The 6-month-old baby girl who was seriously wounded in a drive-by shooting in Chicago while her father changed her diaper has died.
Little Johnylah Watkins died Tuesday morning at a Chicago hospital, a day after she and her father were shot in the drive-by, NBC Chicago reported.
The baby’s death has shocked the community, Chicago pastor Corey Brooks told the news outlet.
"The city of Chicago should be outraged that a 6-month-old baby could be shot and killed in our city," he said. "It's horrific."
The baby’s father, Jonathan Watkins, was struck several times with bullets in the drive-by shooting. Police suspect that the dad was a member of the Gangster Disciples gang.
The gunman started shooting by the front door of Watkins’ van, which was open because he was changing Johnylah’s diaper.
The baby was shot in the shoulder, with the bullet lodging in her left thigh, police told the Tribune. Her father was shot in the left side, right buttocks and suffered a graze wound to his left cheek.
Police were looking at surveillance footage for any clues on the gunman, the Chicago Tribune reported.
"We're going to find who did this and make sure they are brought to justice," Brooks told NBC Chicago. "We're not going to be afraid. We're going to take back our neighborhood."
The pastor said he was offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.
Johnylah’s aunt, Casha Moore, heard the shots being fired.
“It was so loud,” Moore, 18, told DNAinfo Chicago. “So, so loud. It was a big gun.”
The girl’s mother, identified by DNAinfo Chicago as 21-year-old Judy Watkins, was working at McDonald’s during the time of the drive-by shooting, the Tribune reported.
Maryann Young, the baby’s grandmother, said the area is too dangerous to raise children.
"It's too much shooting over there," she said. "I'm trying to get my kids out of there."
The shooter fled to a nearby alley and may have escaped in a blue van, Chicago Police Department spokesman John Mirabelli told DNAinfo Chicago.
The child’s mother had been shot while she was pregnant with the child, DNAinfo Chicago reported.
FOLKS JUST PRAY THIS GUN VIOLENCE IS RIDICULOUS!
